Workplace dress codes?

Don't forget that the entire internet can see this!
Maybe some stuff is better discussed in the private areas!

Workplace dress codes?

Post by DrK » 07 Mar 2019, 10:28

Many companies, including 'traditional' corporate ones, are now relaxing their formerly prescriptive dress codes, or moving away from them entirely:

Likewise with tattoos, piercings, and beards:

So, what's your view on workplace dress codes?
A good way of attracting a more diverse workforce?
Or a risk to the business?

Should a line still be drawn somewhere?
If so, where?

Also, what's your take on 'dress-down Fridays'?

And don't forget if you are prescriptive in terms of your dress code and pay the NMW/NLW then this could fall foul of paying below the NMW/NLW.
For example where you specify employees wear black trousers or black shoes. Or you deduct the cost of the uniform from salary for someone on the NMW/NLW.

I like the idea of a more relaxed dress code, more smart casual. Though I believe some might think a relaxed dress code means a relaxed attitude and yes, sometimes it can lead to that. What it comes down to is expectations and the companies culture. If you're aware of what is expected of you then I don't think it'll be a problem.
